What is Automatic Writing?

Automatic writing is a method of doing your own psychic channeling and developing your intuition. It’s free for you to do, it can be quite profound in the wisdom it generates, and it can be extremely therapeutic, especially when you are in a difficult situation and you are in need of guidance. You ask your question in writing, let the information flow to you, write it down, and review your guidance as often as needed.

I have known about automatic writing since 2019, but it really became a boon to me when I was going through my divorce. I was struggling emotionally, trying to figure out how to live again, after leaving my 7-year relationship, and automatic writing helped me gain new perspective while I was deep in the confusion and fog of depression. It also increased my confidence and understanding in my intuitive ability, as I observed images (clairvoyance) and heard words (clairaudience) that didn’t come from me, in relation to the question I was asking. I would re-read the autowrite and realize that there are certain phrases or vocabulary that I would never use if I was answering the question from my own brain.

What I found particularly funny was when I fought against an idea that came through in an autowrite. Nothing could more clearly demonstrate that an idea wasn’t mine if I had resistance to it. Sometimes the voice would get sassy and say things like, “as we’ve told you multiple times…” and that would also make it clear to me that I wasn’t making this up. Spirit was essentially doing the “per my last email” thing to me! Why would I do that to myself?

Who is answering my questions?

It depends on who you ask! You can ask questions to your higher power (God, Jesus, Buddha, spirit, the universe, etc.) or even your spirit guides or angels. As you grow in your automatic writing journey, you can ask who is answering you, especially if you ask for the guidance to come through one of your spirit guides or angels. In fact, asking questions about your spiritual teams may give you a better understanding of the guidance that is coming through.

What You Need

• A notebook or journal (use the same one every time if possible)
• A pen or pencil
• Questions that you want to ask
• A quiet place to write where you won’t be interrupted

What I love about automatic writing is that it is simple, straightforward, and the materials needed are accessible to everybody.

For me the biggest obstacle I run into when trying to do an autowrite can be finding a private space to write where I won’t be interrupted, especially as a mom of a 3 year old. I found that waking up before my daughter and setting up autowriting as part of my morning routine easily addressed that issue, and I can also set aside time during my workday (hello lunchtime!) as a time where I can autowrite in peace.

5 Steps to Automatic Writing

1. Always write the date of your autowrite at the top of the page.

When you go back to review your autowrites, you will want to know when some of your predictions were made. This is because some predictions may change; future events are not set in stone because people have free will and timelines may change based on what choices are made.

There have been times where my intuitive messages were consistent until someone around me made a massive choice, and my spirit guide told me that the new information came in because a timeline shifted and a new soul contract came into play. I can go back to each autowrite and see where the shift happened, but if I hadn’t put the date in, I wouldn’t know for sure!

2. Start with a statement of gratitude for your higher power and any other entities you would like to come through to answer your questions.

I like to write at the top of each autowrite, “Thank you God, angels, and spirit guides for answering my questions with love.” The purpose of this is to first, specifically invite the entities you want to hear from. If you include phrases like love, white light, or loving white light, that clears the energy field of any negative entities trying to have a false or fear-based message come through.

When you’re writing this statement of gratitude, I highly recommend that you really focus in on the feeling of gratitude and love for your higher power and your spiritual team. This doubly ensures that the message coming through is of the highest vibration. Bonus points are included if you set the tone by lighting a candle or incense and do a bit of meditation beforehand.

3. Write your question.

Open-ended questions are your best friends in automatic writing! If you ask a straightforward yes/no question, it is very likely that you would receive only a yes or a no.

Another piece of advice I would like to offer is that timeline questions can be really hit or miss. If spirit offers you a time frame without asking for it, usually that is going to be more reliable than a responseto a timeframe question. Again, keep in mind that timelines shift, and events that you’re expecting may not pan out based on your autowrites because everyone has free will and can make choices that alter the timeline. However, I find that even with timing questions, there will be nuggets of wisdom that come through in an autowrite that will be steadfast throughout all the timeline shifts.

4. Write down every single response.

The experience of writing down the response, for me, can be quite comedic. I might not even be done writing down the question before I get a response, and I try to write that down as soon as possible. The entity responding to my questions may give me a little bit of sass and I will write it down. If I see imagery, I will write it down; if there is a play on words or a joke, I write it down; if there is a weird turn of phrase or odd vocabulary, I write it down. I try to let the messages be as true to the source as possible. However, keep in mind that every single message comes through the filter of your ego, so there’s no way to avoid a little bit of human error.

I find it to be extremely important to write down the information exactly as it comes to you, because again, the phrases or imagery may be something that you never would have conjured yourself. This is what builds your confidence in your intuitive ability.

5. Review your questions and answers over and over.

Only time will tell if the autowrite predictions come true or not. If they do, this generates a confidence that can open up your intuitive abilities to a new level, and maybe even unlock a new method of intuition for you. If they don’t, what could be a reason that they didn’t? For me, when something doesn’t come to pass, the reasons are usually as follows:

• f they gave me 100% accurate information, it would not allow me to move through the lessons or experiences as needed; every part of the journey is important.
• It would ruin the surprise if they told me.
• Some things come down to my free will and lack of execution; that’s on me, not on them.
• Other people’s free will can change the course of events and options I have in front of me.
• If I’m not in the right frame of mind while doing an autowrite, I could be writing what is coming from my ego and not from God or my spiritual team.

Be gentle with yourself; it’s unrealistic to expect yourself to be accurate every single time. Give yourself some space to grow in your ability. Like anything, learning requires that you make mistakes and learn the pitfalls in order to grow. If some things did come to pass, but didn’t show up as expected, I still take it as a win. Some predictions that came to pass didn’t even make sense to me until it happened, and of course it blows my mind every time!

Conclusion

Automatic writing is one of my favorite ways to find insight and understanding in my life, especially through times of struggle. It can bring a sense of hope when it feels like there is none, and peace in a situation where you wouldn’t have gotten any closure otherwise. Like any spiritual practice, you get better at it as you keep trying. That’s why it is a practice!
